Meteorite | Gebel Kamil | Iron | 2974g
Product detailed description
In the vast and arid Uweinat Desert in Egypt lies a remarkable testament to the mysteries of the cosmos: a crater excavated by a meteorite called Gebel Kamil. This story begins billions of years ago, far beyond Earth, in the cold, dark regions of space. A chunk of rock, formed by a catastrophic cosmic collision that tore apart the iron core of a large body, made its final journey through the void.
This celestial rogue, silent witness to the unfolding universe, traveled on its lonely journey until, in a twist of gravitational fate, it was intercepted by the orbit of the Earth. Flying through the atmosphere in a fiery spectacle that no one saw, it struck the surface of the Earth, unleashing a tremendous force that carved a crater into the barren landscape of the Sahara.
Surprisingly, this colossal impact, leading to the formation of Kamil Crater, is not as old an event as it might seem. Scientific studies have revealed that the crater, and thus the meteorite's dramatic descent, occurred no more than 2,000 years ago, a mere blink of an eye on a cosmic time scale. This relatively recent event remained a mystery to the Sands until the 1980s, when it caught the attention of the Soviet Union. The Tanto geological anomaly was spotted through satellite imagery; however, its true nature as an impact crater remained unidentified.
The real revelation came later, when V. De Michele, former curator of the Natural History Museum in Milan, identified the formation as an impact crater. His discovery opened a new chapter in the story of Gebel Kamil, drawing scientists and enthusiasts alike into deeper exploration of its origins.
From the numerous fragments found near the crater site, we recovered an impressive piece: a fragment weighing more than 7 kilograms. This piece did not come to us as the admired exhibit it is today. It was a raw testimony to the violent history of its arrival on Earth, covered in rust and bearing the scars of its cosmic journey. With care and expertise, our team set about uncovering the true beauty of this celestial treasure.
First we stripped the piece of rust, then we sensitively cut it in half, creating an exhibit of its full beauty. On one side, the meteorite retains its original, rough texture with regmaglypts - fingerprint-like pits created by high pressure and temperature as it passes through the atmosphere. Unique imprints of its cosmic origin.
On the other side, we polished it to a perfect plane, creating a surface so smooth and shiny that it resembles a mirror. It shows the raw, natural beauty of the meteorite together with the refined elegance achieved by human craftsmanship.
Despite its rarity (Gebel Kamil is one of only 150 classified iron meteorites) and the perfection of its condition, we offer it at a price that is one of the best on the market. Our goal is to make these incredible pieces of cosmic history available to those who share our passion for the mysteries of the universe. It is not only a symbol of our commitment to preserving and sharing the wonders of the universe, but also an invitation for others to join in the amazing discovery of cosmic mysteries.
