Meteorite | Aletai | Iron | 224,68g
Product detailed description
It is a 30x30x30 mm cube weighing 224.68 g of the Aletai iron meteorite, which was discovered in the Xinjiang region of China.
The Aletai meteorite is a remarkable specimen. It is classified in one of the smallest subgroups of iron meteorites. Aletai boasts an exceptional chemical composition, in particular the highest concentration of gold within its subgroup. In addition, it contains significant amounts of iridium, the second densest element known to us.
The impact of the Aletai meteorite was monumental and its total mass is estimated at 100 tonnes. Its fall spread out over a vast scatter field that stretched for almost 500 kilometres. The abundant presence of iridium in this geological layer suggests a cataclysmic meteorite impact 65 million years ago, a phenomenon often attributed to the extinction of the dinosaurs.
Aletai's striking optical properties are remarkable. When illuminated, its surface exhibits dynamic changes in reflectivity that create a fascinating shimmer. This visual spectacle is enhanced by the presence of schreibersite, a mineral inclusion that enhances the meteorite's specularity.
